new beginnings

It has been awhile since this blog had been accessed. Busy busy busy.

You tube is so cool and I am such an old fogey. I realized the videos of ReyMey playing the piano can be posted there..... i think it's a brilliant way to keep track of improvements and growth. I could get used to just adding and adding every new song that he learns. I joined the video group posautive to show what endless possibilities could be had by autistic children so the parents can watch ReyMey and get entertained by him.

The sister MeyMey and ReyMey they both have a lot to celebrate this week as again we got their progress cards in school and both have been doing absolutely splendid, the other sister MaRey is also doing great.

I am in the process for looking for another school ReyMey can go to for Grade 4. We are very dissapointed with St. Mary. And today he had a try-out in a newly started progressive school called 'Keys' and the directress told me he is adorable. Adorable, mind you, somebody saw aside from us how adorable my ReyMey is. I hope he gets accepted.

The results of ReyMey most recent neuropsychological evaluation has brought wonderful news.

What is this with this quest for getting tagged as high-functioning. Most schools we have attempted to apply to they ask if he's high functioning. I would only answer back by asking what exactly do they mean by high functioning?..... even the psychologist said he was, I guess we would like to be tagged as that, 'high functioning' to make things easier..... on lots of levels but to be fair we started from low, really low we just got better and better and improved to the point that we reached what is acceptable to society in general as 'high functioning'. Doesn't change anything, he is still autistic.

A lot of co-parents of autistic kids i know thinks ReyMey got it mild, but they never saw him before so I tell them when ReyMey was their kid's age he was worse or same level as theirs, depending on who I was talking to but truly we know he came from very low and he just improved with age.

Let's see, it just so happens I have ReyMey's historical records on hand.... required for new school applications so... to give you an idea of what I mean from coming from low to high errrrr average :-)

AGE Status

2 years old (1999) ---- got diagnosed with autism, hyperactivity, delayed speech, stereotypic; according to Griffiths Mental Developmental Scales, his locomotor is at par ; personal & social 18 mos, ; verbal at 7 mos ; receptive 6 mos and eye hand coordination at 18 mos.

4 years 11 months (mar 2002) ----- occupational therapy -- after three years of OT, got our discharge papers. his perceptual-motor and visual perceptual skill have improved a lot. 12-20 interlocking puzzles. copy designs, recall pictures.... no more problems with tactile, vestibular and proprioceptive stimuli. ---oh and he is starting to read simple words and print.

5 years old (april 2002) ---- speech and language. His Mean Test age for Oral Composite is 2 years and 7 mos. Language skills at 2 1/2-3 1/2 year level. Drooling is still present but not severe. ReyMey engaged in parallel play and not initiate interaction with other children whether verbally or verbally.

5 years 11 months (march 2003) --- speech and language OWLS placed his language comprehension at 3 years 10 month while his oral expression skills were at 3 year 5 months.
7 years 5 months (oct 2004) ----- first neuropshychological evaluation pegged his overall cognitive functioning in the Low Average to Average (WISC-III) . He has attention deficits which affects ability to carry out complex tasks. Academic skills span middle 1st Grade to early 4th Grade. His vineland scales for socialization was at 5 years 9 months. It was a good evaluation overall (mind you we didn't know what to expect and what kind of tests were given until the report arrived after 3 months).

8 years 6 months (nov 2005) --- speech and language re-administration of OWLS he obtained test-age equivalents of 6.4 and 6.3 with an Oral Composite score of 6.5 --- thre was a gain of a year with no significant difference between comprehension and expressive scores.

This is the part then where we, Dad, MaRey and MeyMey and I really boosted all possible learning tools to increase everything. The piano, swimming, bocce, biking, home-class, listening kits etc..

Finally
9 years 6 months --- 2nd neuropshycological evaluation --- excellent results improvements leaps and bound. His cognitive level of functioning (WISC-IV) pegged him at the AVERAGE RANGE (hurray!) that's at wisc-4 and age level 9 . His WIAT-II improved overall but there are still verbal and reading comprehension concerns , and still has attention deficits but truly ... We are all so proud of him. Hard work really starting to pay off.

Many thanks to Tisha of Therabilities. Bunny of Shine. Sara, Bibay, JayBee, Bong, Mitzi, Leah, Rogel also of Shine. Joy and Cathy of Speech Clinic. Cel & Joy of Child's Place and the teachers at Community of Learners.

So there --- having done this let me just say for the record that I'm so proud of my daughters. Writing this down made me realize all the love and help that they have shown ReyMey. I really love them so much. I am so blessed.

What's next... more of the same but now maybe I can probably go back to work again.
